Recommended may well not do Mamma Elvira justice, it might be an awful lot better than that, I just haven’t had the chance to come back and check.

I stopped in here briefly one day on my way home after work for a quick glass of wine. It was swelteringly hot and I needed to be quick. I asked the waiter for a glass of white, and he returned very quickly with a bottle of nicely chilled Negroamaro bianco, biologico (organic) - poured me a glass and popped off. He also left some tarralli which never goes a miss. When the bill arrived it was 5€, which is not the cheapest glass of wine in Lecce, but also an extremely fair price for an excellent glass of wine (and compared to London/Paris/New York - an absolute steal).

Mamma Elvira is nestled in the strip of bars and aperitivo joints just down from Santa Croce. They’re all fantastic places for a well earned end-of-tourist-day spritz, but if you don’t mind burning a little holiday cash, and want to experience something a little more magical; I would definitely recommend grabbing a table outside at Elvira’s, and going wild on their various delicious menu offerings.
